It’s no surprise that social media is a powerful tool today, if implemented correctly. It can generate awareness for brands regardless of where you are virally. With social media, PR practitioners will immerse themselves with clients’ industries, such as monitoring message forums, blogs, etc., so we can respond when appropriate.
However, a recent YouTube video titled “United Broke My Guitar“, posted on July 6, 09, has already reached more than 3 million views. Apparently the guy and his band were traveling and United Airlines threw their guitars onto the plane and his broke–well he got nowhere through calls and emails so he and his band wrote a song and made this music video. It is now one of the most popular music videos requested on youtube and united airlines has had to issue a formal apology and explain the lesson they learned–wow social media.
This YouTube video also spawned media attention from CNN. Looks like the United Airline PR reps need to start responding to these viral videos.
